Michael CampionIn 2007, an article appeared in the Illinois Time’s claiming that Michael Campion, a psychologist for the City of Minneapolis, was unqualified for his job because of his affiliation with the Illinois Family Institute, a conservative Christian organization. Campion was independently contracted by the city to interview potential government employees. When the city became aware of this affiliation, they demanded an investigation into Campion.

An independent psychological testing group was hired to evaluate Campion. The group found that Campion was exceeding expectations for good psychological practice and that there was nothing biased or flawed about his work. Campion had worked for Minneapolis for over two years providing excellent psychological care. Still the city disregarded the evaluation and fired Campion for his Christian association. So Campion sued.

After three years the Minneapolis City Council approved an out of court settlement when it became clear they would lose.

Our Constitution protects the right to be involved with churches and religious organizations. Workplace discrimination based on religion is unconstitutional, yet we are seeing it increase.
